Auto Show 2009

I remember going to the Auto show back when I was a youngin’. My mom took me and my cousin Sean and I still remember getting told, “no more, you’ve already sat inside one car!” I also remember feeling like, daaayum (maybe it was daaaaaag, since I was only 10 or so), how you gonna bring me here with all these cars and I can only get in 1??? We all learned from Lays right? Cars are like a good chip, you can’t just stop at 1!!! Anyway…  I took my children to the car show for the first time today and boy am I nothing like my mom…

Not only did I let the kids get in and mess with as many cars as they could, it usually came at the sacrifice of my own joy. I mean, so what I’m an adult. I still like to look at the shiny, new cars and play with all the buttons. I mean… I have never owned a car (used or new) so this car thing is still pretty impressive to me. I am in awe at the amount of detail and craftmanship that goes into these fine pieces of metal. Are they metal anymore??? I dunno. But amidst all the new and fancy, it was nice to peep the ‘64 Volkswagon Beetle.

\How cute! I mean… my son and his friend were like, “daaaag that’s an old car.” They honestly don’t even know anything about rolling down the window or turning the radio dial. So, just for nostalgia’s sake, this car was definitely one of my faves of the day. Next was the Mercedes CL550. My goodness (!!!) I had to snap a picture of the list price.cl550 list

I mean, c’mon. I know there are people out there who can afford whips like this, even in this recession, but sheesh. I don’t really know what else to say. Can’t hate on the lucky driver of this bad boy. … haha, wondering why I don’t have a better pic? Sorry, it was just so crowded it was hard to get a good shot. (Plus, I was snapping with my BlackBerry and there is no zoom function - at least that I’ve figured out how to use - here’s my daughter lampin’ in the front seat. The leather was sick.

My son and his friend loved this beemer. I don’t know what model it is (I know, silly me!) but it was a drop top that cost over $100k. I don’t think it was better than the Benz, but like I said… my time pretending to be a driver was cut short so the kiddies could have a good time.

So, all in all, as a grown-up, it’s obvious that the auto industry is suffering. The entire mood of the show was just kinda lackluster. I enjoyed it because I can find joy in most anything. But I think the thrill was giving my kids their first “car show” experience. I hope they will remember it for all their lives. I will certainly remember chuckling as my daughter “drove” us to the beach and told us, “we’re almost there.”
